The motor casing
welding station is a plasma welding cell that automatically welds the
seam of a motor casing. The cycle rate on this particular machine is 650
motor casings per hour. This rate is dependent on the operator's speed.
All functions of this machine are controlled by an Allen Bradley SLC 500
Processor.
This machine was developed to solve a distortion problem a customer was
having with their motor casings. The problem occurred after they glued
magnets into the motor casings. The tabs on the ends holding the motor
casings were impinged to hold in the bell ends which hold the bearings.
During this process the shape of the motor caseing became distorted. Because
of this distortion the magnets cracked. Spotting two welds on the seam
of the motor casing with the plasma welder alleviated the problem.

The
operator simply loads the casing into the fixture, when the operator
removes their hands and the Light Curtain triggers the table to
index. The part is then raised up into a shielded welding chamber
by a pneumatic actuator. Once in place the two plasma welders are
then activated by the processor. When the two weld spots are completed
the part is lowered back to the table and the part is indexed to
the next station to cool. The part is indexed one more time and
at this last station the now spot welded motor casing is removed
from the welding cell by a pneumatic automatic unloader.

The welding
machine is constructed from square metal tubing. The indexing
table is made from aluminum 6061-T6 tool and jig plate. The
table is indexed by a Camco Indexing Unit. The tooling and
fixtures on this machine is made from hardened and ground tool steel.
An 8020 frame surrounds the unit with lexan attached to it for operator
safety. The weld chamber is a metal box with two #11 shade
welding lenses for eye protection, yet allowing for some visual
inspection as the welding process is occurring.
